    Quick update: Took her in to the Stellenbosch dealership Saturday morning. They confirmed that the sidestand switch is broken and would cause the engine to cut out (as if it has run out of fuel, like Jughead said). No other problems, so I guess I just handled that situation badly which ended up...

    Thanks man, like I said that thing stopped DEAD it was NOT turning. I wasn't braking either. This was my first ride after picking it up (2nd hand bike, 2014 with 7000 kms) so it might be that there is a bigger problem. That's why I'm here asking the experts for advice, so thanks again!

    Jughead, here is a question for you: If I happened to be switching gears at the same time the sidestand switch thought it got engaged (maybe some friction between the gear shift or my boot hitting the sidestand or whatever), and the engine got disengaged at the same time the switch...

    No that is not true, like I said the rear wheel locked up, as in stopped turning. You said it yourself, maybe there is some other issue (which is why I'm posting here, asking for advice).

    Thanks! Luckily I pulled in the clutch just as it started to skid, so only about 1m mark on the tar. Tyre still looking ok. Yeah I saw those results from the Google search but not any for it happening while moving. I saw there was a recall for the switch on the 2013 model (manufactured in 2012)...
