Thanks Dawg, good to know. Which company did you use to ship back? I am thinking we could go back late next year or very early following one.

Buying a bike in Southern Africa as a foreigner (UK residents)

Hi Mr Hat, good to know That it is easy to buy there. That is definitely a good info. We could try that as We’ve never been to Tanzania. Thanks definitely worth a thought. Maybe in a year or two i will look at going down to that region again. So much to explore yet. So far as we have plans for...

Buying a bike in Southern Africa as a foreigner (UK residents)

Hi Tonteldoos, thanks for the suggestion. the problem is that we need 2 identical bikes and would probably finish our trip in Tanzania or Kenya. Also, if the bikes are not in our names it complicates things crossing borders, especially beyond the Southern Africa Custom Union. cheers, Maria...

Buying a bike in Southern Africa as a foreigner (UK residents)

Hi DW1, thanks for the explanation. i suppose that this traffic number can be obtained before buying any bikes? it seems the main thing is to have someone over there to help. It seems doable. It might be my preferred option. my time line is flexible, late this year, say November or early next...

Buying a bike in Southern Africa as a foreigner (UK residents)

hi, maybe this has been discussed before, so apologies if so, I could not find this. i just got some quotes to transport our 2 bikes from the UK to Cape Town and I nearly had a heart attack. Well, 3,000 pounds, minimum, per bike, for back and forth. That may include most costs like customs...

Costs involved with shipping a motorbike out of ZA - not to return- Anybody ?

I definitely recommend Motofreight (in London) and their counterpart Econotrans in Cape Town. I shipped our 2 bikes back and forth with them 2 years ago with no problems at all. Friendly people and very helpful.

Around Southern Africa on 2 small bikes

;D True  but they are easy and cheap to fix. We may end up buying  cheap Chinese 125s on a future trip, who knows? This is not the end of our motorcycle adventures yet  >:D

Around Southern Africa on 2 small bikes

We are not far from Surrey at all actually!  ;D Although at the moment none of our bikes are in a state to be ridden. My honda CB500 has its battery out and I need to get it prepped up for sale in March. The XT250 will go soon to the workshop as I just got some parts for the USA. It needs some...

Around Southern Africa on 2 small bikes

The biggest cost for us was shipping two motorbikes from and back to the UK. That hit us near 3600 british pounds. Plus the carnet, cost 1000 british pounds for the two bikes, non refundable. We camped  a lot in Namibia and even so it was super expensive. Beyond that, guess we averaged about...

Around Southern Africa on 2 small bikes

So this is the end my report. We rode over 15,000kms, crossed 7 countries, in 4 months. It has been an amazing and thoroughly enjoyable trip. This was our 4th long (over 3 months) overland trip and the first to be totally trouble free. I expected it would be much harder, but the fact...

Around Southern Africa on 2 small bikes

Day 113 and 114 – Cape Town The next day we explored the town on foot. The centre was nice. We found an amazing tapas place called Fork, in Long street. The food there was amazing. The weather was wet once again but it was worth getting drenched for such a meal. With all the controversy...

Around Southern Africa on 2 small bikes

Day 111 – Cape Town – Sunday 16th September – around 200kms? We decided to ride along the shore. The views from there were superb and the weather sunny and not too cold. The road was nice and twisty and as it was Sunday, all the bikers were out riding. We thought about going to the Cape of...

Around Southern Africa on 2 small bikes

Day 110 – Hermanus – Saturday 15th September We had a walk around town and investigated the boat trip to see the whales. At 800 rand per person, we thought it was a bit of a rip off! Instead we walked along the cliffs and saw many whales very close to the shore. It was the season now and...
