Chris, I won't put my cockonablock, but that bolt does not look like an original BMW bolt.

I see on Google that the aftermarket shocks available from the UK have these metal cups.

The standard XT500 has the preload adjustment at the top, how these shocks are fitted. The genuine rear shock doesn't have that metal cap though.

Thanks Wobble. It sounds much better now after the oil change.

Try to richen it up a by lifting up the carb slide jet needle by two notches or go up one size on the main jet. I had the exact problem with my last XT rebuild, but I had gone up from standard to first oversize on the piston. It sounds as though it is running very lean.

Well, It might be louder then the original one but it only lasted about six beeps. Original one on order at R650.

Here is a late update on this topic. I took the bike in to Perry Motorcycles and all checked out okay and valve clearances were in spec. I had done just over 1000km and took the bike to KTM Durban for an oil change last week. They put in Motul 10W60 (which they use when servicing the 690's) and...
