I recently installed an old Oregon pine mantle above my fireplace. After getting a fire going, the underside of the beam became extremely hot, I could touch it briefly but not hold my hand on it. The beam has been sealed with a two part epoxy but I'm concerned that it will spontaneously combust.

It's clear that I need some sort of heat barrier underneath the beam, but I'm unsure of which way to go. Appreciate any comments or advice on what to do about this.

Thanks in advance.
