The Transalp was still new and I wanted to do a longish trip so impulsively as I am I decided to ride out to Gansbay.

It was nice and warm, perhaps a little windy when I left home to Gordonsbay and then along the coastal road to Hermanus. There I stopped at the New Harbor for a look around. The wind was hardly blowing here and it was quite warm. I stopped by the kiosk for the boat trips and walked around a bit.

1

I noted the name of the largish boat based, as its name said, in Cape Town. The name patella brings to mind a knee cap. Now who would ever think of naming a boat “Knee cap”?

2

The water looked so inviting I was tempted to dive in.

3

After a bit I rode on into Hermanus and stopped at the whale lookout point where a small crowd were milling around in the hope of seeing a whale or two.

4

Nothing much happening here so I went off towards one of the beaches for an Ice cream.

5

And then on to Gans bay where I had a look at the harbor. It was deserted except for a bunch of young people in the restaurant, making noise and hopefully enjoying themselves at whatever it was they were doing.

6

Gans bay (Goose bay in English) was very quiet and I saw nothing of any goose but there were a pair of ducks paddling in the dirty water by the slipway. Soon a little motorboat arrived at the slipway and the occupants fetched a car with a trailer and hauled the boat out of the water and drove off, so did I. Went to the top of the harbor which is on raised ground. From here one has an excellent view of the harbor and beyond.

7

Rode on further along the coastal road past the houses and eventually ended up at the little museum.

8

The museum was closed as may be expected but I found an interesting display of Snoek skulls hanging around.

9

And then I found my dream house!

10

What a place! A grand wooden house almost overshadowed by melkhout trees and right across to the sea. Whomever owns this house must be the luckiest person on earth.

After a short sortie to Franskraal I was tempted to take the dirt road to Sandy’s Glen but time was running out and the sun was starting to draw water so I returned. Stopped in at Stanford by the river. There is a river boat called the River Queen on which we had, a few summers ago, taken a trip upstream. The boat is equipped for a braai and some people on the boat enjoyed a braai with beers, wine and swimming, while we sat in the shade and enjoyed our little picnic – really enjoyable and worth the effort.

11

On the road back to Hermanus I found an upside down vehicle.

12

The accident could not have occurred too long ago since the wreck had not been there when I passed this way earlier. I could not make out what make of vehicle it was, these newfangled things!

The rest of the trip was enjoyable and uneventful, hugging the coast back to Gordonsbay and then Back home.
