Below is our review of the 2023 KTM 390 Adventure. The biggest change is of course the adoption of spoked wheels. To test them out, we went up Breedtsnek and aimed for all sharpest rocks in an effort to see if the wheels will break.

Apart from that, the 390 is the same gas it always has been. It’s also the the most sophisticated motorcycle in the 300(-ish) adventure class with a TFT dash, modes, changeable electronic aids and a two-way quickshifter. On sale for R125,000.

On another note, I’ve ridden tons of adventure bikes with non-spoked wheels - in fact, every other contribution to the 300(-ish) class has alloy wheels. Some I’ve ridden very hard for a decent amount of time over all sorts of terrain. I’m yet to have one break. The most we’ve had is some smileys that we were mostly able to sort out on the side of the road using rocks and branches.

On the other hand I have seen spoked wheels get completely destroyed.

I know this is only my anecdotal experience. Surely the good people here have had different ones?
