Advice on covering the inside of my HP topbox

There's a range of DIY rubber paints available for different purposes. Plasticote do one for bakkie liners in the US: https://www.plastikote.com/products/Truck%20Bed%20Liner/Truck-Bed-Liner-Gallon.html In the UK I've seen the inside of panniers painted with a similar product that is available...

    Seat Re upholsterers Cape Town

Here's a pic after I had just finished shaping the saddle. I've since taken off the cover and reinstalled it so that it's tighter and has fewer creases in it. There's still quite a few creases around the base where the material is stapled to the plastic base, but I'm not really worried about my...

    Seat Re upholsterers Cape Town

I did the saddle on my 690 myself. It's not rocket science at all. The finish where I stapled the new material I bought for a cover on could be a bit neater, but the saddle is now something I can sit on all day without any problems. Total price around £10 for the foam and material on ebay.

    Neat Swedish tyre changing tool

Took some measurements for you quickly Lear. The bike is a KTM 690 Enduro Front rim 21" Back rim 18" Rear axle: I wasn't prepared to pull the axle to measure properly as it is bloody freezing in the garage today, but from what I can tell the inside bore of the axle shaft on the rear wheel is...

    Forkboots vs. Forksocks

I've used both, but found that the neoprene sock didn't last nearly as long as a rubber boot. The problem is that the socks are quite tight and so they constantly rub when the fork moves, which eventually leads to them splitting.

    Neat Swedish tyre changing tool

I think the problem with that mojolever is the length. When I pack tools for a trip I have one golden rule - if it's longer than about 30cm it stays at home, so it would be nice if it was made of shorter parts that screwed together. Also both the swedish tool and that mojolever show the tyre...

The inconvenient truth about Namibian Gravel Roads

As one of those people who crashed on a dirt road in Namibia, I think it's only fair to have my 2 cents worth on this thread: I high-sided a bike (yes it was a BMW, a Dakar) near Ais-ais. Hind-sight is a wonderful thing and looking back now I can think of 3 things that I did wrong; firstly...

1980 XT500 wiring diagram or manual

I have 2 parts catalogues for 1980 "G" bikes, but they are both from America. At first glance they both seem to be the same, but they came from different sources and I've never tried to compare them in any detail. Let me know if you want and I'll stick them in the Namibian photo dropbox for you...

1980 XT500 wiring diagram or manual

I have pretty comprehensive wiring diagrams for a range of XT's (European and American - the wiring harness differed). I think I sent them all on to CT when he was working on my bike, but there might be a few others that I have that were not relevant. Let us know what year the bike is as the...

650 Dakar not engaging gears - Need advise

I remember that, it was on an XT500 in Tanzania. We camped in a schoolyard while we were fixing it. Fortunately it was one of the first things we checked - was having nightmare thoughts about having to get new clutch-plates posted up to Dar for CT's bike or having to tow him back to SA! It was...
