I would say get the Tenere with your height, but the 800gs could be more comfortable for the pillion? I also started with a 650 after only riding scooters. Takes a while to get comfortable but I have no regrets and it takes the hassle out of buying and selling. The DR and XR are not really...

The `09 model of the x country is the low one. The 07 & 08's are erm higher than the gs650 twin I think. Check out the DR650 too.
