    New Member -- Richard Luck

Welcome Richard, I love Colorado, I was in Colorado Springs for "training", my Hotel window looked straight at Mount Cheyenne, the Nuclear Bunker, lovely part of the world. And Pikes Peak is just up the road.

Built to last or BS testing ?

They used to have to, as one set of plugs is unreachable. I think the Discovery to do drivetrain work they remove the whole body from the chassis!

Built to last or BS testing ?

The worst I saw was a friend of the wifes Hyundai Elantra (I think) someone in marketing decided that to sell in the RSA market they needed a Diesel as it was a Rep car market. So they shoehorned this diesel motor in and off to go, then it needed a cam belt change, ok no issue "oh sheet" its...

In an electric motor ZZ is ok, in the electric motor any .001% efficiency improvement will be taken.

No CAD does not do this generally only in a coarse version, I mean real FEA and CFD.

Built to last or BS testing ?

No, its not an off the wall calculation, its more than a few lines and I would need to do it before lunch, but not stupid difficult. I had problems with "control" you need to steer a ship, it wants to go northwest, but the waves are coming from the East at so many waves a minute at such a depth...

Low cars generally include low profile tyres, with the potholes I have an aversion to Low Profiles.

The difference these days, is that the entire Con Rod and actually the whole motor can be modelled and analysed using Finite Element Analysis, so every small stress raiser can be found and designed out, not just by good practice, but by analysis. (y)

Strangely to many, this is not the test that would normally be used to determine the "strength" in terms of suitability for use. The real test is to determine the point at which the steel elongates, the steel is elastic until a point (it recovers its extension) then it yeilds and is "plastic"...

100% reducing reciprocating mass for faster response, clunky forgings versus precision and as for including a VW Diesel rod, they are comparing a chunk of granite with a beautiful statue, they should weigh a set of them and see the variance on the M rods versus the clunky forgings. :rolleyes...

Built to last or BS testing ?

The one was designed with a slide rule and a big factor of safety applied, to cater for a lack of material composition control and imprecise machining. The other is very precise and controlled manufacturing and is therefore much lighter for use in a “race” engine. The test is ******** in my view.

SHOW US PICS OF YOUR PETS - Poll added

My daughter worked at a VET, she organised ours with Outsurance, I hate Outsurance, but their Policy has a fixed excess, not a % of the claims like a lot of others. Our policy kicked in and 48 hours later we had a R15,000 claim for a broken foot (freak accident stomped on by another full grown...
