As jy my vra is daar 'n paar sparks missing ook... jy weet, so bietjie misfire nou en dan. Maar ja, laat ek nie hierdie thread nou omsit in 'n "What woman want" een nie. 😄

Well yes, my electronic one is indeed built into the distributor housing. But, I wanted to get rid of the coil and HT leads, and use pencil coils instead - thinking they were easier to switch than a regular coil due to the TTL logic interface.

Yes indeed it would, but a MOV's design is such that it eventually breaks down (usually to a short cct) after numerous cycles, as they are designed to suppress the occasional spike, not to continuously suppress spikes like a TVS (Transient Voltage Supressor) can.

I've just thought of something. When in normal use these coils are totally enclosed by the valve cover, meaning they have grounded shielding around them. In my application they are open, maybe I should add a metal tube around them to reduce EMI.

I've actually considered using a 12V trigger, as that would make the drive circuitry simpler and I'm sure they are built resilient enough to withstand such input values, but I can't find any info anywhere on their design criteria, and all of them trigger with a 5V signal so I didn't want to...

Appreciate the effort. (y) Interesting that it only goes up to about 4v or so, with a nice slope.

Those battery wrenches are great! I got myself one a few months back and used it during the mini's engine assembly. Hell it's an awesome piece of tool, I'm sure you're going to enjoy using yours!

Yes, I agree, and that was my assumption too. But, in the end it can't hurt to add more protection to the electronics anyway so maybe this is a blessing in disguise.

Yeah the more teeth the more accurately you can determine engine angle. With 60 teeth they will know with certainty every 6 degrees of engine rotation, unless it's driven by the distributor (which turns at 1/2 engine speed) then it would be every 12 degrees. Mine, with 36 pulses gives me a...

If they have EMF supression it will be built into their ECU. I doubt they would built it without proper protection though, this problem is my own fault for assuming the coils will have a "clean" trigger just because it has it's own switching circuitry inside. I'll also be checking on my wife's...

There is (or rather, was) a diode to help suppress the EMF. Additionally, a mosfet transistor has, by nature, a reverse diode across its drain and source pins. With these coils being switched to +5v (instead of to GND like an oldschool coil) the backEMF goes to the 5V supply via the mosfet's...

So, back to the garage. Install everything, I have charged the battery, it's time to test. Give the engine a crank, and a few times it almost started... then the control unit just died. No more spark outputs, nothing on the display. Hmmm, weird. Ok take it out, back to the lab and open it up...

So, first disappointing weekend. Recall I had made an optical sensor that detects open slots in the distributor. This disk that rotates has 36 equally spaced slots... well actually 35 because te 36th one is blanked off. So in one revolution of the distributor I get 35 short pulses, then one...
