Ben 10: (not) getting to grips with mud

I think it will need to remain a mystery, since it turned out that it is very likely on private land (hence the locked gate).

Ben 10: (not) getting to grips with mud

Day 4 continued The next section was of the stop-and-stare sort. No steps. Just lots and lot and lots and lots of rocks. Peter’s chirp: “Roof of Africa is nowhere near finished.” Our valiant guinea pig did his duty. Poor guy. No-one was near when he fell, so he had to self-extricate. Remo’s...

Ben 10: (not) getting to grips with mud

Day 3 continued The next series of pictures show the conditions we were up against: lots of wet. Wondering whether the wheels will break traction here: *****-footing it: Lance and I stopped to eyeball an obstacle of sloped rock that started with a rocky dip. We needed a...

Ben 10: (not) getting to grips with mud

I'm very glad that someone reads the words. There are quite many of them! Probleem is tyd. En die feit dat ons baiekeer paie ry wat nie die hoofweë is nie. Meer en meer plekke word toegemaak vir bikers danksy n paar mense wat dit opdons vir almal. Ek raai ek kan dalk nogsteeds kiekies deel; net...

Ben 10: (not) getting to grips with mud

I noticed. I'm interested to see what the road conditions will be like when you get there. It seems to change quite a bit over just a matter of months - or days, weather dependent!

Ben 10: (not) getting to grips with mud

Prequel I dropped off the forum for a long time. Life got busy. It doesn’t mean my navigation partner (Lance) and I weren’t riding; I just wasn’t writing. Work and riding time got in the way of that. Yet here I am again, mainly for the following reasons: (1) We’ve completed a trip that’s...

    CRF250 Rally/DS

69,300 km on my Rally and still happy. This bike has taken me places I would not have dared on my 650 GS.

    Volunteershoek Pass Rhodes

I see I didn't specify when our trip was: not in December, but April this year. We were in Rhodes area between 16 and 22 April. It was very chilly, but we were generally lucky with the weather. It only rained on some of the days, but when it did rain, it increased the difficulty on a logarithmic...

Tyre needed Rhodes, Colesberg, Aliwal north - new tyre failure (resolved)

I thought I'd post an update. Thanks again all for the offers of assistance, in particular Hein and Tampan. The story ended well, with Kim able to source a tyre in Bloem. She completed the remainder of the 3800km ride without a hitch (some snaps attached, in her element on her 250L). Among the 5...

    Volunteershoek Pass Rhodes

Replied to the pm before I saw this, so I'm posting it here for posterity' sake for others who may be interested. We were warned not to do Volunteershoek due to the bad conditions experienced by someone in September 2021. Yet pass conditions change. It was super easy - actually one of the...

Tyre needed Rhodes, Colesberg, Aliwal north - new tyre failure (resolved)

And, yes, it is an MX tyre. She's used the same one for other 1000s km trips including tar highway with no issue before, but I suppose this stretch was just too long. Hard school fees.

Tyre needed Rhodes, Colesberg, Aliwal north - new tyre failure (resolved)

Thanks all. Peter and Kim left at 6am this morning. They should be in Bloemfontein by 10am. They will hopefully find something at one of the bike shops there. Kim has Hein's number if anything goes wrong.

Tyre needed Rhodes, Colesberg, Aliwal north - new tyre failure (resolved)

Thanks chrisl. Hein has been really helpful. Though at the moment it seems the best bet is a slow ride to Bloem. Still waiting to hear whether there will be a suitable tyre, but not really any other options.

Tyre needed Rhodes, Colesberg, Aliwal north - new tyre failure (resolved)

Thanks Jean. Just arrived in Colesberg after a slow 80 km/h on N1. Icy cold. Still haven't found a solution yet. We will also keep phoning around on our side. Let me know if Tampan has any leads.
