Tyre needed Rhodes, Colesberg, Aliwal north - new tyre failure (resolved)

Leaving Three Sisters now, riding slow to Colesberg. Helmet comms linked to phone in case of calls. Seems no one in Colesberg sells motorbike tyres. Any second hand tyre that fits will do though.

Actually Colesberg or Aliwal North. Won't make it to Rhodes on that tyre.

5 of us on our way to Colesberg tonight, Rhodes tomorrow. Friend's brand new tyre knobblies shredding off after less than 500km on 250L. Please help with any contacts that could assist, even with second hand tyre. We have tools, just no tyre... Number zero 72 4613 seven 96

    CRF250 Rally/DS

Such a beautiful bike sidetrack! Obvioiusly I am heavily biased. But it looks lovely while still shiny. Now to add some memories! Lance and I have a running joke about resale value of our bikes, or lack thereof... But we have such a jol. Although I do remember the trauma of those first deep...

    CRF250 Rally/DS

I just use book-cover stickers on my panels during a trip; not very fancy or good-looking, but easy to stick on before a trip and easy to take off afterwards. I've stuck some on now before our trip next week. Though I'm starting to wonder whether to bother. My panels are scratched to pieces...

    CRF250 Rally/DS

Yep, still here, still have my Rally, still enjoying it immensely (see attached pics, all taken in the past year). Five of us are heading off next week for a 10-day bike trip to Rhodes to ride the Ben10 passes.

    Honda CRF250L Service

Was it used on- or off-road? You get higher mileage on-road. That is very far though, so maybe parts quality could be a factor as well. I'd be interested to learn the results. There's a very active small bikes & dirt bikes crowd here.  :thumleft: Definitely my experience of it. For me it's...

Generally it's not ideal to put a new chain onto old sprockets. It tends to decrease the life of the new replacement parts due to existing wear (however little there is). 20,000km sounds like an average run for chain and sprockets. I used to get 17-20k km out of a set on my 650GS from mainly...

Down on the farm with the Bushlander

Parklands Bush Rides (was once quarry riding) - awesome playpen - be careful of crime and oncoming traffic

What an amazing experience that was. Despite being time-barred and/or rerouted both days, Nicole and I still got a solid 115-120 km of riding in each day - I won't go so far as to call it racing! I'd be keen to do it again, even knowing I'll probably not be able to make the full route, and...

Good luck. Don't take any of the dead-end bits. ;)

Parklands Bush Rides (was once quarry riding) - awesome playpen - be careful of crime and oncoming traffic

Lance and I were also out there. We saw two sets of other bikers (one was two girls - one on a quad, the other on a bike). I found I could follow Lance's GPS track, if there was a track to follow... It seems he created a track with the idea to see whether some really old trails still existed...

Lance and I may bump into you in the bush, but we are going on our own mission tomorrow morning. Lance is loading me a track, which I'll try follow - my own orientation before orientation. But definitely see you at Tankwa!

Which affordable dual sport bike for beginners, and why?

My suggestions for a bike for a newbie basically mirror those from 2StrokeDan: light, low, predictable (non-intimidating), bomb-proof. When I was looking for my first dual-sport bike, everyone suggested the 650GS, since you "cannot go smaller if you want to keep up with everyone else". I ended...

    Honda CRF300L and 300 Rally

My bike (250L Rally) has a similar rack installed. As Chris said, it does sit clear of the seat. It doesn't look it, but you can still remove the seat (I have). Same as the 300L, the Rally also has a bolt-on seat - annoying to remove, regardless of whether a rack is attached.

    Honda CRF300L and 300 Rally

You can't compare new and second-hand prices. If you want to do that, then compare with the potential going price of the 300L once it's on the second-hand market, which will probably be similar to that of the 250L Rally, anything between R45-60k it seems. Also, as far as I can tell, the...

1100 km in a day?! Yikes. That must be a solid day's riding. The Cape Town to George stretch took me about 5 hours and I hardly stopped at all; only for fuel (never even took my helmet off). What does the 13-tooth front sprocket mod do exactly: on highway vs. off-road? I'm not big on the mods...

    Honda CRF250L Service

My Rally runs at about 7000 rpm for 110 km/h indicated, 8000/8500 rpm and up from 120 km/h indicated, so it sounds the same as yours. As mentioned previously, indicated and gps speed are very different. Top gps speed I ever clocked was 130.1 km/h (about 140-odd indicated). I don't think I've...
