2019 Canola Run - the route

My apologies for the late reply Buff. I've been out of the country on a social media sabbatical holiday, so I couldn't attend the Canola Run. I hope whoever the rider was is ok. Interesting to know that there's another pink bike out there!

*** Sorted *** Advice for a new Lady Rider...?

I count myself incredibly lucky in this regard. I haven't seen any other guy that can sit at the speed limit for an entire Cape Town-to-Namibia border ride, as we did on a southern Namibia trip when I was on my 650. I love Lance's riding style: there's usually no destination in mind, just a...

*** Sorted *** Advice for a new Lady Rider...?

When I started riding, I was advised to get a 650GS, for many reasons mentioned beforehand: keep up with the boyfriend (on his invariably bigger bike) and “you’re going to sell the small bike anyway, so just get the big one to start with.” I started with zero motorbike riding experience (had...

Motorcycle trips in Northern Namibia – what is important, and what is not?

    1. Would you rather fly in, and have your bike trailered by us to Windhoek, or is it something you would prefer to do yourself? 2. Would you prefer traveling with the crew (and your bike)? Given that it's difficult for those based in Cape Town to get the bike to the designated drop-off point...

    Honda CRF250 Rally rear shock

Thanks, but I'm perfectly happy as is. :thumleft: I cannot justify the extra costs, especially when I'm not bothered by the suspension. I don't ride fast/crazy enough to warrant a stiffer spring.  ;) It's a good thing the bike squats quite a bit when you sit on it - it's very tall otherwise. I...

    CRF250 Rally/DS

As ek n 2000km Namibia trip met n CRF230F kan aanpak, kan mens dit sekerlik doen met n 450L. Ek moes net olie verander halfpad. Ek dink nie die 450L het meer poeier as die 250L nie, net meer torque, maar mens sal dit seker voel. Die verskil van torque tussen die Rally en 230F was hemelsbreed...

    Sorted****CRF230F Tyres*****Sorted

I used the Maxxis Maxxcross SI back and front for my Namibia trip. 2000km tar, gravel, rock and sand and it's still not done. Affordable too, rear was R650 in 2019. I bought a front in 2017 for R750. The front lasted from that date until after my Namibia trip, a good 4000km. It's fooked now though.

    CRF250 Rally/DS

I went even smaller during Kaokoland. I was on the CRF230F. To find out how the Rally rides Kaoko, you'd have to check with Lance - he borrowed it. Though the impression from his feedback is: Rocks / rough stuff = great. Very plush suspension and a light guy makes for a happy ride. I missed...

    CRF250 Rally/DS

;D Thanks guys. Yet I'll continue to live life in the slow lane on a small bike. But, as you know from first-hand experience, we will be having the most fun.  ;)

Bucket List Ride - 23 Rivers, Wolkberg, Serala

This. The small bikes really changed my enjoyment of the rougher roads. It really does become a funduro.  Beautiful pictures.

Trans Karoo, Going Postal and a Return Adventure

The Matroosberg ban is a recent change and is reflected on their website: https://matroosberg.com/4x4-trail/. I guess some hooligans spoiled it for everyone. I know there's a story attached to it, but can't remember the details. I think there was a bike-car altercation. If we do head to the...

    CRF250 Rally/DS

Thanks for the offer, but I've already ordered the parts. I don't think I ride well enough to notice the difference...

    CRF250 Rally/DS

False neutral sounds a bit familiar, but I don't have much to complain about with this bike. Many happy km so far. Getting close to 22,000 km and finally need to replace my chain and sprockets. Sprockets actually look relatively good, but chain is stretched beyond the point of no return - I...

Trans Karoo, Going Postal and a Return Adventure

We are really spoiled for choice, in the Western Cape and South Africa as a whole. When you read of the nanny-state shenanigans in, say, Europe, you can only be happy we haven't reached that point of policing yet. "Thou shalt take that one authorised dirt road." Can you imagine? Speaking of...

Kaokoland: a perspective from a pink bike

Respect for tackling the routes on a 1000cc bike. :o I wouldn't have survived. You handle the big beasts in sand way better than I can. I need an enduro bike to make it to the end.  :-\ It actually works quite well and, thanks to the ability of choosing any split-second, you can get really fun...

Trans Karoo, Going Postal and a Return Adventure

Thanks for a lekker RR. Most of the route is our backyard, but Katberg is still on my bucket list, alongside Bastervoetslaanpad and, thanks to your RR, Devil's Bellows! I'm going to go peak at your 23 Rivers RR now. Extreme = extremely interesting.  ;D Did you ever finish the Namibia RR where...

Kaokoland: a perspective from a pink bike

Thanks TVB. General comment: It seems that I forgot to reduce the size of the photos before uploading to Flickr. I've resized and relinked all the photos, so the page should load faster now (47 MB of photos, rather than 159 MB).  :o Two hours of labour later. I won't do that again in a hurry...

Kaokoland: a perspective from a pink bike

Thanks for the kind words dirt rat. I hoped to do the road conditions and the area justice. It is a stunning, but treacherous place. We have Lance and his GoPro to thank. Almost all of the 'photos' are from his footage. He also spent a couple of hours doing a quick "prettify" of all 214 photos...

Kaokoland: a perspective from a pink bike

Day 5 continued The group was starting to bunch together again, and we spotted some almost-forgotten faces. Today I gained new respect for Gordon and it only grew as the road conditions worsened. He was on the heaviest bike of the group, a 230-odd kg 750 Africa Twin, but he could ride! Gordon...
