I have spoken to KTM and they say that they think that they are no longer available and a rough estimate is 80-85K. I have asked if they can get more definite info.

To clear a few things up. A budget rebuild on a 990 will cost a gasket set and whatever needs to be replaced just to get it running. To put this into perspective, a gasket set is around 5K, camchains are now about 2K each, the guides are about 1300 bucks, the hydraulic tensioners are about 2K...

The opportunity has arisen to purchase a new ex factory 990 engine. I need to be careful here with what I pay for it. It is not something I need right now but circumstances change, as we have seen with this crisis we are sitting in currently. The reasoning behind this is to be able to sell it...

Rufus sent me a broken one which I am going to try and make a plan with. Then there were two there that came out of the blue. It seems there’s another one as a possibility. But I suspect it’s not going to be a cheapie.

ok to make things clear my bike was not just timing chains ,https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=239130.0 it had run big end bearings as well, all replacement parts that needed to be placed that were not in spec were replaced, including the gearbox oil rail and all bearings and seals...

Each to their own. Alfie included. I wonder when last he got his hands dirty on an LC8..? I don’t rely on other people to tell me how to do it. The manual tells it the way that KTM does it. I follow those instructions..  I do them without removing the engine or the cylinders and the heads...

All of the cam drives components can be replaced with the engine in the frame. The heads amd cylinders certainly not need to be removed. The manual clearly describes the operation in the “stripping the engine” and “assembling the engine” chapters. A huge advantage is the frame is the engine...

I need to haul this one back to the top one last time. Does anyone have a used rear header pipe for a 990 that they want to sell, before I order a new one from KTM..? I am growing a list of parts for the bike I am building quite quickly as well as growing a list of bits that will be for sale...

They are fixed with special shouldered bolts, if you are looking for originality as well. Once you have got the fender, let me know if you need fasteners. I should be able to help.

Thanks to a really great response, I have the ignition switches I need. I am still looking for a header to fit the rear. Even if someone has a cracked one that came off their bike, I can repair it. Im not fussed about it having a Lambda bung, I won’t be needing it. But it must be a 990 pipe.

I cannot believe there’s no interest in these things. They are normally the first things that sell on the bikes I have stripped.
