SA and Namibia in 2021. What was I thinking?

The next day we had to head to the coast and Swakopmund. I'm not that fond of Swak, although the fact that it is basically a German town with German bars and restaurants is interesting, but we had to go there so we could then head up to get to Palmwag and beyond. Rob and Nicky were making...

SA and Namibia in 2021. What was I thinking?

The ones we talked to seemed OK blokes (maybe doing this sort of trip for the first time) but I guess some will hit their limits more easily than others. Not my cup o' tea, guided group tours, but if I was to do river beds in Damaraland I'd want some backup...

SA and Namibia in 2021. What was I thinking?

After the trials of the previous day I think we were all more than happy to have a couple of days off the bike exploring Sossusvlei before heading back to the coast at Swakopmund. Sossusvlei Lodge was very busy, the first place we had come accross that was. It was also about double the size it...

SA and Namibia in 2021. What was I thinking?

Before we go any further, can I just say I don't get to practise gravel riding between my trips because there is no (as in none) access to dirt or gravel roads in Scotland. And please remember this was written originally for the home crowd, so explaations of the roads and whatnot are for them...

SA and Namibia in 2021. What was I thinking?

I love taking pictures of my bike at abandoned petrol stations, and this place was more grist to my mill. Fantastic. There's still wallpaper from the twenties in some of the rooms. This sign would prove to be prophetic. We also met the guide who showed vlogger Itchy Boots...

SA and Namibia in 2021. What was I thinking?

After a night at Norotshama River Lodge (disappointingly run down since we were last there, although we had an entertaining evening with an American ocean-going tugboat captain and his gal), we headed towards next our overnight in Aus. The road to Aus runs along Namibia's southern border and is...

SA and Namibia in 2021. What was I thinking?

Our next stop, on the west coast at Hondeklip Baai was a bit of a punt, as there really isn't much to the town, although being close to the Namaqualand National Park probably means more people go there than you might expect. However, there were two passes I wanted to ride which skirted the...

SA and Namibia in 2021. What was I thinking?

So, we finally made it to Cape Town, albeit via Johannesburg. We'd elected to stay away from the 'City Bowl' opting instead for Sunset Beach, which would be handy for Paarden Eiland where bikes would be. Unfortunately, as I mentioned above, they didn't arrive, at least not when they should...

SA and Namibia in 2021. What was I thinking?

Another Mr and Mrs Three Dawg adventure! I added a bunch of pics to this RR which I first posted on my local advscotland.com forum, so I thought I'd put it up here. Hope you enjoy it, bearing in mind it was written for my home crowd.. So whose stupid idea was it to go to South Africa, a...

Guess who I just bumped into ?...............Noraly

Americans are big scaredy-cats and they chew things over too much. We used to get asked by guests from the States very often is it safe to walk 'downtown' (in Inverness). I'm like yeah, you're six two and sixteen stone, you'll be fine...

    Best bike for you.

With me it's ceased to be about the bike so much (I have had two Laverdas and riding them, especially the 180 was ALL about the bike) but where I go on the bike. No plans to chop in the 1100 for the latest hot poop.

Very sorry to hear this - met him at a spitbraai in 2015 - he really knew how to put on a great event.

    An afternoon tour in Scotland

Maybe head up to Braemar via Glenshee for starters. Excellent road and a decent cafe (The Hungry Highlander) that is a bit of a mecca for local bikes.(y)

    An afternoon tour in Scotland

Yeah, that will be Keith Nairn at Laverda Scozia in Paisley. Good mate of mine, very long waiting list these days for his services though (Laverdas break down a lot.) ;) Nice pics. Hope you enjoy Scotland, there's loads of great stuff to see, but sadly no gravel. Campers are a piggin'...

Griet die ou GS ...... Tips/Trips/Tricks/Pics and General Bla Bla Bla

As Welsh says, a piece of thin (maybe 1/4") foam on top of the tools keeps them in place. I also have a thicker piece in place of the original puncture kit. Tested down your way, everything stays in place.(y)

    The Road bike thread 😅

Sold my last roadbike - an Aprilia Falco - earlier this year. Waaay too easy to ride at silly speeds, I was definitely heading to clink on that one or a massive fine. Beautiful, beautiful motor though. If I get another road bike it will perhaps be something like a Morini 500. Have to be very...

Where has your bike taken you today?

Beautiful weather recently, so a wee trip over to the west coast yesterday - picnic on the pebble beach at Ardmair watching paddleboarding dogs. Quick comfort break at Knockan Crag looking over to the area known as Assynt and the distinctive shape of Stac Pollaidh in the distance. 3000...
