The only reason I could see a  purpose for the 790 ( and others like it) would be to do regular long ( over 500 km) rides on tar and big gravel at over 120 kph.  The 690 does everything else better, easier and  cheaper. And when you do come off ( It happens off-road) nothing breaks off.

I think we miss the point when we start adding screens and extra stuff onto these off-road based adventure bikes. The standard offering with  a bigger tank is all that’s needed.

I have to admit thst’s A very convincing ride report and given me food for thought when I replace the 690 rentals. Anybody want to buy 6 x 690’s 😜

And the 790 is better than the 990? Weight ?  No! Power ? No ! Looks ? Certainly no! Price 😂😂😂 All this hype for this. I have not doubt. It’s a nice bike  but I fear another sanitsed BIG tourer with as much character as a Scandinavian wall unit.

No doubt the 500 class are the ultimate adventure steeds but never likely to be that mainstream . On the plus side they allow less skilled riders to visit places they wouldn’t be able to get to on bigger bikes.’ The negative is they get unpleasant on long easy roads and unless you’re willing...

At Amagesa about 3 three years back my good mate GJ won and put about ten minutes into the entire field (including Riaan van Niekerk on a factory Dakar 450RR) on the Orange River stage, riding a sock 690. No suspension work at all. And that's one tough stage. Makes you think doesn't it?

Omninorm. Pm sent. Sadly our rental fleet are strictly for our guided tours only. I guess there is a gap in the market for rental dirt bikes but the cost of maintenance and the high purchase price would mean rental rates would be prohibitive.

I have a set of KTM690 wheels in Jhb I need to get to Cape Town. If anybody is heading this way or knows of space in a van or trailer please let me know. Obviously willing to pay . Cheers, John

What planet is the bloke from?  No mention of the 500EXC or Husky 501 as competition to this bike. Surely a deliberate omission.

I've been using mine for short trips like taking the bikes to the dealer for services. Super convenient and easy to stash away. I use the heavy duty option from Martin with the two square mounts for my 690's . The ball mount is for enduro/mx bikes only.

This running tires in story doesn’t hold water. I buy the tire. Ride the bike. I don’t have time to go through a week long sequence.. If it cracks it’s product fault. What happens if you’re  mid tour and have to replace rubber? Do you take off your luggage and spend a couple of day’s running...

I’m definitely in for that 690. I keep my bikes two years and the timing is spot on for March arrival

I do KTM690R's and Husqvarna 701's but only if I guide the ride.  Strictly no free rentals
