    Sidetracking

I have done most of that last week and the week before (https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=250700.120) - at least the bits doable on big bike. One cannot get to the Djate pass from the south - there is actually track heading in that direction, but requires plastic, will be back on 500...

    Sidetracking

Yes you did. I refer as Little Kaokoland to the part of that range north of the humbly named Sidetrack pass - and at the north it ends at Malogeng village.

OK, found the bridge - it was way further south, I hit the river further north where R579 crosses the river on another bridge. If you are keen I can send you tracks for that section - it might be better than the one you did, as it is deeper into tribal land with minimum private property, unlike...

    Sidetracking

Where is that old bridge? Missed that one. But I believe it is better to stay up north of the river as there aren't any farms just open bush with tracks, while I can clearly see farms south of the river. I followed the river on the north side all the way to Nkotokwane - a village across the...

    Rat racer's weekend getaways

Oh yes, forgot about that connection. I have plotted it at home but didn't ride it. However it was only few km and then it connects to the dirt highway I was describing at the bottom of the mountains. Edit: The bottom (southern most part) of your track, the sharp turn east and then down south...

    Rat racer's weekend getaways

When you say you wanted to take the Steelpoort mountain track to R555, you mean the one that runs south of the pass? That one is quite doable but you cannot connect to it diretly from the pass (well I believe you can but on 500, not hippo). You need to get over the pass you did to the western...

    Rat racer's weekend getaways

Well as said, next time just ask. No point running into the same dead ends I already did. I have no problem sending the tracks I have ridden / plotted and warn you about the dead ends I encountered. There was only one on that river track, but I started further up where R579 crosses the river...

    Rat racer's weekend getaways

sidetrack : you should have asked - I would have sent you GPS tracks I have ridden / plotted in that area. Would give you plenty to explore.

    Rat racer's weekend getaways

sidetrack : Yes, it is getting rougher and rougher - I guess since the roads around the mountains were tarred, it is easier to go around for locals, rather than navigate this one. Did you ride any of the sidetracks (pun intended)? On top of that pass you ran turn right - north on big dirt...

Cape Town to Kaokoland - preparation and FARKing the 500.

Not to be a party pooper - but are the borders open? I thought they are still closed or if open than very restricted mode. I think Rickus also mentioned that the only way to enter Namibia was via Windoek airoport. Hopefully I'm just out of date, but rather check.

Cape Town to Kaokoland - preparation and FARKing the 500.

PM sent. One more thing - 500 is pretty reliable, but if you are concerned, I would maybe swap the regulator for Mosfet (mine went wonky at about 16k km and killed battery) and maybe carry spare fuel pump. Highly unlikely you will need it, but if you are cautious type, maybe take one - you can...

Cape Town to Kaokoland - preparation and FARKing the 500.

Maybe check this report from Metaljockey for suggestion of the route from SA to Kaokoland through Namibia: https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=39411.0 As you can see, Metaljockey made it through Kaokoland unsupported with wife on DR650 (who I think we relatively newbie) and his little...

Cape Town to Kaokoland - preparation and FARKing the 500.

Relax, it is not as bad - you have ridden around the world and Kaokoland is not that different from other places. I have done Kaokoland twice in December on much heavier bikes fully loaded (XT660Z and Husky 630) solo, and I was fine. Sure carry enough of water and start early, but on 500 you...

    Rat racer's weekend getaways

At the top of the pass I have turned to side track running noth towards couple of mines. Initially it was a mine road and soon I came to sign forbading entry of unauthorized vehicles, whatever that is. So I had to go off my plotted route - the dirt road contined down the mountain west so I...

Looks like the Dawgs are running out of steam

Kamanya  , or other mods in the know: Are there any plans to reopen the forum to its former (IMO much better) status, when only JouMa and Trading Section were behind the wall, or is this now permanent state? I understand that there was some kind of Chinese attack that the current solution was...

    Rat racer's weekend getaways

After the little detour I continued on the main road up the pass. In the upper reaches the pass got gnarly in places, but nothing that average guy who has done let's say Sani pass on big bike couldn't do. The views from the higher up are quite impressive.

    Rat racer's weekend getaways

Riding up the pass, I went to check another candidate for the connection south km or two up the road in the sharp bend - the one I have seen yesterday from high above about 6 km away. Promisingly there was track going up the valley, but annoyingly it finished after about km or 2 in little...

    Rat racer's weekend getaways

And sure enough, right around the corner the things got interesting. I have walked two - three hundred meters up and the track was badly washed out. I would consider trying it on 990 being fresh with group of people willing to lend a hand. But I was pretty wasted from the day before, it was hot...

    Rat racer's weekend getaways

Next day I woke up to even hotter day. The plan was to gun it on main tar / dirt roads to that pass I failed to reach yesterday and just got glimpse from 6 km away and try to find connection back south to the roads I have ridden day before. Looking at the satellite images night before on my...
