I follow 'Twostokestuffing' on Youtube, the mad scandinavian fiddling with his self-made engines. He has/had/will-have an engine that supposedly/hopefully will induct based on resonance only... however, to get the thing to start (and/or to "idle" sortof) he uses a reed, with the main resonance...

Nope, in fact it's the other way sort of. A reed has mass hence is sluggish (relatively speaking mind) to react to pressure differences - which make them operate! A rotary valve does away with this, however, and thus, needs to be timed spot-on - but this last bit especially creates it's own...
