The not-so-handy handyman and other randomness

I have been making a LOT of sawdust in my workshop lately. With the thickness planer its a lot of "skaafsels" that I actually just shovel up and put in a garbage bag. The table saw and the miter saw dust however gets vacuumed with the shop vac...

Life in America - We made the move.

The storm has developed a lot faster than they were predicting. Right now it is a Tropical Storm named Milton, and by tomorrow sometime it will be a Cat 1 Hurricane. It is predicted to hit us around Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning as a Cat 3, maybe more. The winds, although they are...

Life in America - We made the move.

We are going to get slammed next week. A hurricane is forming down in the Gulf of Mexico, and the predictions are that it will strengthen into a major hurricane by the time it hits Florida. Right now we are directly in it's forecast path. By now I am getting a little blase about the...

Life in America - We made the move.

Oh trust me, I am still fuming. I'll be back there tomorrow morning to get the temp filling replaced. 1. They better not even THINK about charging me for it... 2. Mr Smarty Pants had better not be behind the reception desk... But honestly, I don't have the money for bail. So I had better just...

Life in America - We made the move.

Oh, and let me just add that this was after I had to pay in $870 as the co-pay on the insurance. In SA speak, that's the excess for the medical aid. That's a shade under R15k. The co-pay for the crown will be almost $400. That's almost R7k. Just for the EXCESS.... I have heard stories of...

I was a little confused by the "adjustable" ratchet... until I enlarged the pic. Looks like you can adjust for what size drive it is?

Prices were in GB Pounds, so he's back home. He's just a bit slow in posting the pics of his US trip ;)

Life in America - We made the move.

This morning I had a root canal done on a molar tooth. They put in a temporary filling, I am scheduled to go back in a week for a permanent crown. 5 hours after the temp filling went in it just crumbled. I was sitting at work concentrating on month-end and spreadsheets and stuff when I noticed...

On a lighter note, according to google memories, it was around this time 8 years ago that I bought my F150 bakkie

Nope, never had the pleasure. I worked on Enstrom Helicopters at Wonderboom Airport and got my civvy AME license on them.

I left work a little early - for me that is... I left at 5:30 so that I could do the last hurricane prep before dark. I went through all the hurricane shutters and tightened them up. They tend to rattle a lot, which is annoying when trying to sleep. I only closed down the one on the bedroom...

Life in America - We made the move.

The first outer bands of the hurricane are getting to us. Some rain so far, and 100% cloudy. But the track is still staying well West of us, so we shouldn't get hit too bad at all. Just some squalls, a lot of rain. Places West and North of us are gonna get hammered. Some of our branches in the...

Life in America - We made the move.

So it seems that we'll be getting a bit of a blow-job Wednesday and Thursday. Hurricane Helene will hit somewhere along Florida's west Gulf coast as a Cat 3, perhaps maybe even a Cat 4. Of course I am hoping that she'll stay further North, and make landfall closer to Jacksonville...

Hannes, make a better plan to join those clear pipes together. They will come apart and flood your box. Get some more solid adapters or something, just sliding the pipes into each other and clamping them will only work for a short time.

    Snap-on Toolbox

Yes, a hacksaw blade will work, also a longer feeler gauge. I had a snap on toolbox many years ago when I worked on helicopters. I used a hacksaw blade to get the drawers out so I could clean and grease the sliders. I also bought mine used, and sold it for a profit. Bought a Used Mazda bakkie...

I would just try clean that yellow spray off, clean it nicely, and give it a couple of coats of matte clear laquer. I love the patina of the old stuff, it shows character and life. The clear laquer will just prevent any further rusting or degradation of the finish. And of course remove the...

I just took the dogs out to pee before bed and saw this storm approaching. Pretty wicked lightning, I've never seen this much electricity before! the noise in the background is the AC running, it's still very hot & humid here
