"Zinc based die casting alloy" , or "monkey metal" is what we used to call that stuff. "It can't be welded" is the rule, but I have actually seen it successfully welded by some who either didn't know the rule or were prepared to ignore it on the basis of nothing to lose if you fuck it up.
Brand regardless, every bike I've ever bought apart from two, has been voetstoets, so the issue of whether there's a dealer in town, or even in the country has been largely irrelevant.
In terms of what I've hung on to for longest it's been BMW by a goodly margin, then joint second tie between Triumph and Yamaha.
In numbers it's been Triumph (5) Suzuki (3) BMW (3) BSA (2) and one each of various others. So not a brand junkie.
