Here's to the boys that build our toys.

One of my great joys is to leave Gamkaskloof early morning and doing the 47 km to the exit. Fast. Last weekend it dawned on me once again how incredibly capable and hardy our motorcycles are. Taking big hits on really rocky roads the suspension and tires should explode and fall apart. But they...

Why no klx 300 for South Africa ?

The Honda 300l has a customer waiting list stretching into next year. Kawasaki launched the klx 300 in 2021. In some ways it seems as good as or better than the CRF 300 (read suspension) Yet Kawasaki SA doesn't list it in their model line up. WTF ?

    Husqvarna 701 enduro long range.

At last it seems like a manufacturer is making a bike ready to ride with factory fitted long range tanks- check out 2020 701 Husky lr. Seems like 3 tanks each with a separate fuel pump - about 6 gallons total. Game changer as far I'm concerned.

Just how good is the X Challenge ?

After completing 6500km including Kaokoland my verdict is that it is a very capable and versatile motorcycle.Happy at 120 - 140 km per hour on tar - stable on dirt at speed and capable of 30km stretches of deep sand no problem. With some suspension upgrades handles rough routes equally...

The future of the 650 single cylinder class.

The current situation in SA regarding above boils down to only two models and one manufacturer- Ktm 690 and Husky 701. Are these bikes worthy of taking the class forward in the footsteps of those that went before ? What are they like to live with and what are the major issues that need to be...

Xchallenge -burnt pin on fuel pump assembly(COMMON FAULT)

On the top of the fuel pump assembly is a four pin electrical connector - these are basically four metal pins connecting the inside and outside plugs to each other. The problem is that the fourth pin to the right (OUTSIDE BROWN WIRE) generates enough heat to melt the plastic resulting in a poor...

What is the most common cause of fuel pump failures ?

Obviously dirt in the fuel is a major contributor - What about low fuel levels in the tank? Many pump failures occur in bikes with small tanks - 10l or less capacity - could this be because these bikes are operated with low fuel levels on a pretty continuous basis?

If you are in the Cederberg soon !

Give the Heuningvlei road a bash- did it two weeks ago and it is quite challenging after all the recent rains. I doubt a fourwheel drive vehicle would make it up without some road building.

Mitas Eo9 dakar - a step too far.

To scratch an itch I decided to replace the eo7 rear with an eo9 dakar on the x challenge. Fitting the eo9 proved to be an absolute bitch and I eventually gave up and remounted the eo7 that went onto the rim like butter in comparison. I am not convinced that I would be able to deal with the eo9...
