If it will help, a women did this trip solo a while ago on a jalopie of a bike, I can't remember the detail but it should be on the web somewhere. I know there was some part in Central America where she could not pass through and had to fly the bike to the next country.

Royal Enfield is a super effective bike for use in Africa - it's cheap, simple, easy to ride, loads of torque and basically indestructible. Sounds like the best bike for the job.
