Hi Rommel I think you have bout a great bike, unfortunately sometimes they some have an odd problem. I perhaps didn't explain properly, but I am not suggesting your starter had any issue, but that there was a possibility that the valves might need adjusting or an out of spec decompression...

Does it happen generally only when the bike is hot? If you are somewhere you can test this while it is having a starting issue, turn ignition on, and jump start but directly to starter motor (negative on footpeg and positive on starter positive connection). If it happily start, it tells you...

I'm not so sure you should be comparing these two bikes. One thing I would reccomend is if you are looking at KTM 640 vs BMW for a more offroad orientated toy, you should be looking at the Xchallenge not the Dakar.

Haha.. awesome. While I think it was the best engine they ever put in the defender, I fear I am going to have to let my 90 green monster go as well in the near future. I have a Td5 90 that requires enough of my attention, and is economical enough to use as a daily driver.

Hi guys. Thought I wuold check with you gents. I'm looking for a reasonably priced K100 8-valve cylinder head (Including cams, tappet cover etc. and throttle bodies. I know its rare that these engines ever need work, but thought it was worth a shot. Cheers

So I have it all together now.. been for some short rides, and everything seems great. Its even starting up easily once hot. Lecap, you might be right with regard to the charging of the battery, but I will investigate that later. The fact that the bike is starting easily once hot means things...

Interesting info, shot. I realised some plonker got into the bike when I realised the wrong size shim was used, real poor form. I decided to up-size all the shims, putting the exhausts at ~0.30mm (the larger side of the specced gap) and the inlets at ~0.05mm (the smaller side of things). Did...

So I decided to pull the valve shims and measure all thickness's. I pulled the cams without removing the tensioner as suggested was possible on some sites. Well needless to say the chain jumped on the crank sprocket and re-seating the inlet cam was impossible without removing the tensioner bolt...

Thanks for the reply lecap, I've been hoping for a reply from one of you more knowledgeable folk. On the bike I can monitor the battery voltage when riding via the instrument cluster, and it does jump to 13.7v when running, sometimes 12.6v at certain rpm. The battery was new (7ah Motobatt)...
