agree. that was what I initially thought @Hark3n meant, but then realised he was talking about actually creating the route. I use google maps on my PC. I litter the route with waypoints, thus forcing the routing irrespective of what the setting is. my M.O. is as follow: WP before a turn WP...

there is a setting in OSM that tells it not to stick to roads, rather follow the track settings >> [profile] >> navigation settings >> map during navigation >> snap to road [on|off] also in settings >> [profile] >> navigation settings >> avoid roads
