Thanks for the response DavidMorrisXp, my bike is in Cape Town at the moment.  Looking at the link the Rockfox they look very similar to the the OEM with no support in the upper rear section.

The standard BMW crash bars bend with the smallest crash. I am going to fit Alt Rider lower crash bars this time, but utilise the OEM uppers, also fit an AltRider skid plate plus X-Head cylinder covers. They are not cheap but are reputed to be the best solution. Has anyone else had experience...

Thanks for your comments Tom van Brits. From my research Wilbers shocks are not the solution in my case, § as they require the BMW shock to utilise most of the components as they are unable to replicate the electronics of the OEM unit. So Wilbers can only replace a less sophisticated shock...
