Damage to an underinflated tyre EVENTUALLY shows the results. It may look fine but de-lamination takes place and soon chunks of rubber will litter the streets.

The higher pressure means that the centre blocks are working the hardest against the rough tar surface. The youtube video on "highspeed drag racing tyre" shows the deformation and its scary.
