Today I got lucky and was ‘the spotter’ whilst the other guys had to clean the grain bin.
That involves monitoring of the air quality and bin entry permit.
Saw the sun shining into the bin making almost a flame like image with the dust.
That picture of the fat guy on the ladder is one that Freddy took of me👀😅7558583B-7A67-4F7A-8CAE-E528C01B3132.jpeg 646C4E0F-75FE-47A6-BDE4-324C59FC77EF.jpeg 47040ED5-8A3C-4494-A87B-8D0E6297EBD0.jpeg

I don’t know if you guys and girls have seen the new airfare rates? I have recently helped a guy to come over, just over a month ago and it cost me $2756 for his visa, airfares and what he needed. That is R45k. I got a copy of his ticket, was R32k!
He is not yet in a position to start paying me back and he will also have to save money to come back next year.

Some guys may get the opportunity to come over and then not being able to raise the funds.
Then you get some that just do not cope and leave within a week….loosing all the money to get here.
I have seen that happening both in Africa and here. One got to be sure to know what you letting yourself in. This is hard physical labour.
I am spoiled to drive truck sometimes for extended periods of time but it is the exception on the rule I suppose, I am just extremely lucky that they often need a driver.

A combination of stuff Tom, including the oil price, staff shortages, someone (in the business) told me that while it sounds easy to get more staff, the airport security clearance takes 3 months.

Ek het soos my gat gelees!

Whats interesting to me; I do not say it’s the case in add above:

Many people will apply for a ‘farm manager’ ( Plaas voorman) position without any relevant farming experience.
They think ‘it should be easy or/and ‘I am willing to learn’
No people; if you want to become a ‘plaas voorman’ you actually need a qualification in agriculture and you need (not neg) at least 10 years of experience hands on.
Then you also need peoples skills to be able to oversee agricultural workers.
It is not an easy job (pun intended) suited for every Tom, Dick and Harry.
I still have a ton to learn as an agricultural worker regardless of my ‘o so fancy job title hete in the States: Operations specialist
Yes you need to run computer programs, tractors and other heavy machinery, trucks, in my case even a loco. You need to fix mechanical breakdowns on just about anything. You need to understand ground prep, moisture, fertilizing, germination, herbicides, pesticides, harvesting….yes it’s a professional job to be a farm boy.
Do not forget the long working hours.

Tom, I had a Graduate Quantity Surveyor work for me a few years ago, a BIG lad his parents had a farm in Bothaville, we got on ok but were miles apart socially (the mad Welshman and the young not streetwise Bothaville farmer), he was telling me how the mielie planters use the GPS Sat Nav and plant the seeds wider apart at the edge of the field as it will be drier. I didn't think of this despite coming from the UK which had/ has the highest Agricultural productivity in the world.

His old man got sick and he went back to the farm earlier than expected, he was too nice for our industry.
