Alternative routes from Pretoria to Cape Town

After the tumultuous response I got to my enquiry about interesting routes to Mbabane (read 21 times, 0 responses) I am going to stick my neck out and try again.

I plan to ride from Pretoria to Cape Town and back  soon. My normal MO is to start at 4 in the morning, stay on the N1 and do in one day. This time I plan to do one of the legs over 3 days, and ride a few interesting/challenging roads. I’m thinking PTA, Warrenton, Prieska, Carnavon, Fraserburg, Sutherland, Ceres, Cape Town.

Any information on this route or portions thereof, comments, suggestions, road numbers, alternatives, better ideas etc?  I’m not holding my breath.
