Bike
BMW F650GS / Dakar
so today was the launch of the new 450 bmw.i went along with a bunch of other dudes to ring its neck and take advantage of bmw`s unbelievable generosity and hospitality.
the bike is tiny and not quite as tall as my x challenge so i was pretty happy that i wouldnt fall over at a standstill.first thing i noticed when i swung my leg over was that there is no ignition key!so no parking this outside eastgate!
a stab at the button and the little beaut was ready to roll,we were told about the general layout of the rhino park area and then let loose.a lot has been debated about the front sprocket set up and i must be honest and say i didnt notice anything different in the ride although the chain doesnt take a hammering so it can only be a good thing.
the bike lifts the front wheel easily in the first three gears and goes like hell, but so do all the other off road bikes out there, but there lays the bm`s trump card, its road legal aswell.
the bike is so easy to ride fast that its scary, one finger on the cluth and all obstacles are cleared
and quickly forgotten.if you like to ride offraod while sitting you will hate the seat.its small narrow and short, when i had to sit for crazy cornering i found that i always sat down on the fuel cell plug and then had to pull on the bars to get off it,a minor thing but when you lose the plug you`ll sit in a hole.[i hardly ever sit while offroading]
i found the rear shock much, much better than the air shock,in fact even over some big jumps the shocks felt brilliant, pity the x didnt have that shock would make it a much better machine.
i rode the bike for at least two hours and only fell once, that being on a huge left hander that i hit way to fast,i knew it was going pear shaped when i started to see the rear wheel come into view,i was thinking that sillyb is going to be pissed if i break another bone.
the fall was a long slide that had no pain related injuries, luckily the baby nbeemer was also unhurt.
lots of inside info was learnt at the launch.
if you by one tell them how much you weigh!!
standard spring is for an 80 kg rider.....get the right one.
you can fit the plug and play from day one,it does not effect warranty......only racing the bike effects the warranty.
the detune was used to get the bike passed emmision control.
the front sprocket is a simple task to change its explained in the handbook dvd.
the race pipe is exspensive but they are working on a cheap one.
my biggest gripe of the day was that i felt the handlebar grips were shite,it felt like i was holding straight onto a skinny bar.
the bike is the obvious alternative to any one wanting a plastic bike with bmw`s renowned backup service
