It is finally here!!!
What you have all been waiting for!!!
bobnob's dedicated thread to the best mid-class DS bike every built!!!
The BMW F650GS Dakar is the quintessential mid-size DS bike - perfect for touring, perfect for playing, perfect for the daily commute!
Sure its not as dedicated hardcore as the XR650 or not as road biased as the V-Strom and the Trans Alp - but it does everything - and it does them well :ricky:
O yes - and its sexy as hell :mwink:
I have now had the Dakar for just over 2.5 years and did 50000km - it has never used a drop of oil!
But like all great bikes it has its weak spots - and the steering head bearing is the Dakar's nemisis
I'm on my 3rd bearing already!
By the looks of it I can only count on 20000km from a set - so far all 3 sets have been replaced under warranty - but I'll have to do the next set myself.
Some of the farkles I have done since I got the Dakie
SW-Motech crash bars
SW-Motech centre stand - an absolute must have!
Touratech low front fender - an absolute must have if you commute in the Cape winter rains!
Touratech rear shock protector - keeps all the crap off the shock
Touratech alu chain gaurd and rear brake/abs protector - to get rid of the plastic air scoop
Touratech adjustable and collapsible gear lever
Touratech and homemade Garmin V GPS mount
Scarab Design orange light cover - really brilliant if you commute in heavy traffic
Bark-Buster hand guards
Bark-Buster handlebar raisers
Wild@Heart serated foot pegs
Van Der Linde exhaust - the best sounding F650GS exhaust ever
Wilbers progressive springs running 8.5w oil
Touratech front low mud guard - it really keeps you dry in the rain. The Dakar has the ability to throw so much water up into your face it really is a good mod.
SW-Motech engine guards - personally I think this is the best bars for the F650GS. I dont like those grey hoops that you fit at the front and some of the other bars reduce your ground clearance which is not cool.
The Wild@Heart serated pegs are very nice. Together with the Touratech adjustable gear lever you can get the perfect fit for work shoes and boots.
The SW-Motech centre stand is a must! I cant understand how you manage without it - loading luggage, fixing a puncture, fitting it in to a very untidy garage - it just works!
The orange head light cover is a must if you commute in heavy traffic - cars see you for miles! You can never have to much visability.
Bark Busters and raiser - nothing much to say.
Got replaced the plastic air scoop with the Touratech alu set. Probably the poser in me
The Touratech Garmin V mount was fitted on a little piece of flat bar - to ensure that it is visible and does not interfere with the tankbag
And last but not the least - the alarm triggering VDL!
I love the Van der Linde pipe - really awesome!
I have one or two other mods not listed here - luggage, etc. I'll add them later.
