Boots - a gearing question

How do you change gears with your boots?  Did you change the angle on your shifter?

My first, full off road set and apart from walking like Luke Skywalker - only way to change gears is on the side of the boot.

Also any advice on breaking in a set of boots would be welcome. :mwink:
