Well how stupid can I be ???
On Sat afternoon I decide to do some routine maintenance on my dak, like checking the battery and cleaning and lubing the chain etc. Ok so I was fiddling with my bike
I strip the fake tank side panels off to get to the battery and put the panels next to my car SO I DONT STEP ON THEM AND BREAK THEM 8)
I Put a brick under the side stand to level the bike out a bit - BIG MISTAKE
Take the battery out to check it, clean it up and clean the dust inside the battery holder. While standing on the left hand side of the bike I lean against her and what happens - she falls over
I try and catch her but she has picked up momentum and I go over with the bike. On the way down we hit the step ladder and that falls onto my car and makes two big dents in the door
I curse and think to myself what an idiot I am and then get up off the bike. First thing I check is to see if the bike is Ok - great no broken mirrors and nothing running out of the bike - sjoe relief.
But to my horror I notice that the handle bar fell onto the right hand side panel and broke it into three pieces
I curse again because these side panels are helish expensive (R 3500.00 for the right hand side) and because I put it there in the first place.
I then notice that my right wrist is really really really sore and its beginning to swell a bit. So I pick the bike up, struggling like mad because my wrist is now killing me and everytime I try and pick up the bike its like someone is sticking a knife into my wrist >
Eventually I got it up and onto the side stand. Put all the bits back including the battery. Clean up the garage, put the bike into its place and go and ask my wife to take me to the emergency room at Wilgeheuwel because my wrist looks a tad swollen :-\
Anyway get xrays, my wrist is broken
Costs involved in checking my battery :
R 1200.00 for emergency room
R 360.00 xrays
R 380.00 for specialist (excluding cost of cast and gloves etc)
R 3 500.00 for new side panel (will see if I can get a second hand one first)
R 1 000.00 to remove two dents in my car door
R 200.00 for pain tablets
R6640.00 - the cost of my stupidity
Not being able to ride my bike for 6 weeks - priceless !
Lessons learnt :
1) Getting a F@##$@# centre stand for the dakar (Adv I will contact u shortly).
2) An accident can happen so quickly.
So becarefull of checking your battery - strange things can happen
Cheers
