Bumbags

Except for the fact that they are just backward moonbags, aren't bumbags quite dangerous in terms of possible lower back injury should you come off the bike?
Imagine you have one of those things that you pierce tubeless tires with to plug in your bumbag and it punches a hole through your back if you fall on it 
What are your experiences/thoughts?
