Changing your wife

Sitting in my office a while back, Isaac comes in. I look up, pained. These guys have a habit of bothering me when Iâ??m busy with some figures, or trying to get a tender completed on time.
Yes, I say.
Eishâ?¦.. (This is never a good start)
I gotta problem (I was expecting that after the â??Eishâ?¦â?)
Yes, again I say
Well you see, Iâ??ve changed my wife
What  ???
Yes, my previous wife was not good for me anymore, so I changed herâ?¦..
Andâ?¦.  :-\
Well you see, I understood my previous wife, but this new one EISHâ?¦..!!!
So how is it that Iâ??m part of the solution ?
Huh ???
Never mind, what do you want (I know whatâ??s comingâ?¦)
Can you borrow me some moneyâ?¦..

So it came to pass that a few weeks ago, I too, tired of my mistress (No, not my wife - happily). Putting it more truthfully â?? a gat jeuk !!!
And if there was a boss (OK, my wife fills this role to some extent), then I too would have walked into his office and started.. Eish

My Silver, beaut of a 950 found a new home and I too went looking for a new mistress.

It came in the form of a brand spanking new 990S Dakar motif KTM, and like Isaacâ??s new wife, this was going to cost. Not necessarily in money, but in time and patience as well

Test your new wife, - before she changes
Mistake number 1.
I loaded the bike onto the bakkie and took it home and a quick 60km (running it in) and I was back in the workshop. Not a good test. Not a test at speed, not a decent test
Immediately things were being removed and being changed
a. HID Light
b. 2 Auxiliaries wired to glove box
c. Additional power feed from battery for a pump (10A on Aux potentially too little)
d. Removing rubber from footpegs
e. Fitting 2 GPS mounts â?? 1 on dash and 1 on handlebar (donâ??t ask)
f. Fitting aluminium radiator grille
g. Adding more spare fuses
h. Changing from Wheel to Excel rim and fitting new TKC tyre and 4mm tubes lined with 2mm tube
i. Putting puncture resistant fluid in tube
j. Fitting larger and better rear luggage rack
k. Fitting pannier brackets
l. Fitting better and stronger handguards
m. Fitting my previous Scotts damper and triple clamp
n. Fitting a 16T front sprocket (still to be done â?? decided to run it in first)

Check out your new wife â?? as your would normally do before any ride
Mistake number 2
I did not check the rear tyre pressure â?? surely this would have been done correctly at the dealer
I did not check out the fuel taps
I did not test the suspension â?? properly !!! (who of you do??)

Test your new wife â?? before the Honeymoon
Mistake number 3
When it comes to biking â?? highly recommended

So leaving for the Bash on Thursday morning, I was to learn a few valuable lessons. My beautiful new ride was to test my resolve to the extreme and I kept on turning the following over in my mind â??Patience is a virtue, patience is a virtueâ?¦.. >:D

In no particular order

The fuel light came on during the test ride and I nearly did not make it home that first evening.
Then just after Heilbron, the same thing only after 100km. WTF. It cannot be ??? . Then it dawned on me â?? the fuel taps were still closed and only the right tank was being utilized

The front tyre was too soft â?? for tar riding (never trust another mans gauge) â?? It was only 1.6 bar

The rear tyre was too hard â?? I only checked this on Sunday â?? It was about 3.7 bar

The bike would develop a nasty rolling headshake from about 148km/hour and would get progressively worse. I changed the suspension settings in Ladybrand from Comfort (level 1) to Basic (level 2). Now the problem only re-appeared at about 158 â?? 160km / hour. As I was running the motor in still, This only manifested itself during the short sprints.

Enter lots of good solid advice at the Bash. Thanks to all who were concerned and came to help, especially to Paulsky â?? You are a star my man !!!
We dropped the forks in the triple clamp, dropped the preload two turns on the rear shock and upped the preload two turns in front. A major improvement, but top speed was now limited to 165 - 168km/hour before the headshake started again

All during the day on the way home on Sunday I played around with the rear preload, softening more had no effect and stiffening up made the problem re-appear at lower speeds.
Then it was time for the front preload to get some attention â?? another full turn and speeds up to 175km /hour were now possible

All this time we were experiencing a terrible crosswind which died down late afternoon. A short burst to 180km/hour late afternoon and the bike was as steady as an arrow

Plans for this week:
Test the bike in normal conditions with no load or panniers (no heavy crosswinds)
Check wheels for balancing issues
Phone a suspension expert to test my settings and confirm that they are right

So,

If you are going to change your wife, make sure you give it enough time, do your homework properly and in a controlled and systematic manner.  ;D ;D ;D
