cheapest/best way to get bike to JHB from CT?

I'm planning to go to JHB in April - and from there ride to Tzaneen, and then all the way back to CT, hopefully via Lesotho.

but I need to get my bike up to JHB.
If I put it on a train, can I leave the panniers on?

I recall reading about some guys who trailer bikes up to JHB.

where do I start looking for the best option?
