Ride safe - crash bags for bikers

Air bags - more correctly inflatable crash-protection bags - have become common in cars; now it's time for motorcyclists to use a similar form of body protection.

Dainese will show its version of an everyday motorcycle jacket containing the bags and an automatic inflation canister at the Eicma show in Milan from November 8-13 in a joint presentation with crash helmet-maker AGV.

RACING VERSION IN 2010

Their joint banner will be 'Italian Legendary Protection' - and no, they're not selling rubber goods.

Dainese unveiled a D-air Racing system to the Milan crowds at Eicma 2010. This year the road-going version, D-air Street, will be showcased. As with the track version, D-air Street is a technological platform designed and built to protect riders by detecting a fall, slide or hazard and instantly inflating the bags around the rider’s body.

Inflated, they are almost identical to the life vests demonstrated on every airline around the world, but the biking version will turn a biker from rider to Michelin man in the blink of an eye - which should be good for a few laughs after a minor fall on the Sunday breakfast run.

Or a life-saver, of course.

The vest/bag took 10 years of development, research and testing, its maker claims, "and is a highly evolved technical device".

SKULL-MOULDED HELMET

It's been called "the greatest discovery in protection since the crash helmet" by men’s lifestyle magazine GQ and the racing version has won two international awards - the GQ Car Awards for 'Best Safety Measure' and 'Clothing Product of the Year' in Motorcycle News’ industry awards.

The D-air Street will be shown alongside the new version of AGV Standards, an innovative method of crash-helmet design that uses an accurate skull-scanning system to mould a helmet precisely to the shape of the buyer's head - an equal fit around the whole skull to increase safety and comfort.

Nothing worse on a long ride than a wobbly helmet... except falling off. For which you'll need the D-air Street.
