I've just been pm'ing ETS who's in the Northern Cape, where I used to work ... so I figured I'd put up the pictures I have from being up there... they're not photography beauts.. [[Replaced the sunset pic - taken from my front garden, o the vaal]]

Anyhow, something maybe to make you want to go up there. Where? Where the Orange and the Vaal meet (yeah yeah, I know their names have changed..)

These are my memories of there...

Same me, just my previous bike.. Aprilia Pegaso .. and at the glacial pavements it's my current bike bmw dakar 2000 model.. which now looks like a zebra (at bottom)

It was lunch time, on a road where I nearly rode over a 1.5m leguaan
One of those roads that kinda proves "their was a glacier over north cape theory...flat! flat! flat!

Awesome sunset created by using a digital camera in low light conditions which confused the CCD into swapping colours..
taken near the confluence where Orange meets Vaal

Pair of donkeys that lost its owner - I followed their tracks winding along the roads for at least 15km without finding the driver. The harness was broken and fixed with wire, resulting it them being covered in places where the wire had dug into their skin. So I set them free, in the middle of nowhere.

Riding to PK le Roux dam was quite an adventure, and the 5 icecreams at the end were well worth it..

Yes, this IS the whole of Orania!

I'm told the idea was good, but the implementation failed because
(1) the area (in the middle of nowhere) didn't appeal to the upmarket Afrikaner (no offense meant)
(2) those who couldn't make it anywhere else drifted to Orania.. thus lowering the potential

This doesn't mean there are no "worthy" folk there - there are the farmers who contribute greatly, and one or two that subscribed to the ideal & moved ..

Google Earth didn't do justice to this map ... once again I am google-challenged, and didn't know which of the options to switch off, so it would give me a map rather than what looks like the baby dribbled on your shoulder...  :(  but I'll hunt for a better version..
