Race Dog
My normal screen is the post 06 Dakar screen, but since most of my length sits north of my legs this dumps a huge amount of wind onto my shoulders.
I've tried the locally made screen. Twice. Doesn't work too well at speed, and making it of Perspex is, well, not very bright. :lol8:
Bumped into this thread, and thought I'd give it a go. I paid R112 for the bin ($6 my ass) and another R200 for a roll of Chuck Norris Velcro (which I haven't used anyway). And got this:
Messy, I know. But I am not known for my patience. Besides I wanted to establish if it works before I try to make something neater. I needed a heat gun to bend the plastic (think it was polypropylene), so that messed up the finish a little. The first few efforts were propped up slightly with a few rubber tap washers. This proved to be a mistake.
This was Mark I, which looked okay when standing next to my braai with a beer in my hand. But it worked like ****.
Mark II was the same with a 90-degree lip at the top. Better in the neighbourhood but as bad at highway speeds.
Mark III (still using the same original bin!) had a different shape: no V down the middle, a larger scoop at the top and a 'breather' hole at the bottom. Best so far ... until you hit 100 km/h, then you see double.
Mark IV was hacking Mark II and cutting a 'breather' into the bottom. Nope. Image below:
Mark V is the above, but without the scoop (now only four small holes) and at a slightly more angled (raked back) position. And so far it works (boy, was that a surprise). I prefer it to the BMW Dak screen, and it catches more insects. Standing and riding (like some folks do between robots) :deal: is a lot better without a chest full of wind trying to push you off. Buffeting is minimal to non-existent. My peak (Uvex helmet) is slightly noisier, but that can be fixed.
Now to make a neat one ... :lol8:
