So a while ago I said I was confused about my feelings about buying a XR650L.

I thought it had to do with the fact that I was planning to buy my mates R but he changed his mind. Well, I have to say I am very glad I bought the L because yesterday I rode his R for the first time....
Firstly, the bike is a monster! Good grief that thing pulls like a tractor on steroids!!! I didn't have the place to really test it but those first few gears feels like it will remove your head. Absolute blast!
But....
It would have been totally unsuited for what I needed at present.
I'm no Dakar rider and that thing feels like it will become a handful real quick in the rougher stuff for my skill level. Also, I needed something to commute with and although his bike is road legal I would never have been able to use it as a commuter because I would have done it only once before it got stolen. No key, just kick and go.
And that seat! Good grief...... BMW should put those on the 1200 since the riders always stand. Hard as granite made my coccyx scream for mercy on my short run.
So the XR650R is a monster, a real sociopath! But I am really glad he kept that bike and made me buy a "plaas bike".
I still miss my 1200GS and always will but am starting to fall in love with my Honda tractor.
