I've started to look for parts here:

I will also post some progress on the build here, would appreciate input and advice.
The plan is to buy as little as possible and try and recycle some components and parts.
So far I have 10" trailer wheels, a 12 V battery, a 12 V gate motor with gearbox, a PVM speed controller and some bearings and other odds and ends:
30 A PVM speed controller. The motor only pulls max 10 A and 120 W, so the car is going to be really slow, but that's not a problem considering the size of my property.
Gate motor gear did not come off the gearbox shaft gently:
I'll need to build the speed controller rheostat into a accelerator pedal, might be tricky seeing as it's rotation is 300 deg, I guess a pedal only rotates about 45 deg? I've also got some old Subaru timing belt idler bearings, might work nicely as front wheel bearings.
I've got a 24 tooth 8 mm pitch timing belt pulley (also from a Subaru). Will see if I can get a matching 48 t pulley and short belt. This might be nicer than a chain for the final drive. So far I'm thinking of going with a solid rear axle, but it might not steer very well without some differential action?
I'm also starting to draw up a rough outline of the chassis on Inventor:
Some things still missing:
- Double pole double throw switch - for forward and reverse - Can get this from RS Online - R89
- Low voltage cut off switch/relay - to protect battery - not sure, need recommendations for a cheap one?
- Steering wheel
- One or two better condition 10" trailer tyres
- Two UCP 205 plummer blocks for rear axle - should be cheap
- 25 mm BMS round bar for rear axle
- Laser cutting of brackets and adaptors
