on my 2012 800XC I recently had my back shock rebuilt and it made me realise that my(non-adjustable) front shocks needed attention and the oil had only been changed once at around 30,000km. No problem to strip and clean and check (the oil was very dark!!) and all looked OK. The manual specifies 619cc of oil which I dutifully carefully measured out and filled the shocks. I refitted them and what a disaster - they had about 3 inches of travel and then went solid. Too much oil. So out the came again and the oil was overflowing.  I did the oil level check of 107mm below top of tube with no spring and fully compressed. I had to take out about 95cc of oil and now the shocks are fine. So lesson learnt - don't believe the 619cc as it seems that that may be the total oil capacity and not the working capacity.

If you don't want to remove the spring then the level is 41mm below the outer tube top.
