Ok so my father-inlaw had a fatal crash on the 18/3/2010 on his 2007 Gs 1200.
He lived in Nam and came down to visit me and then him and my dad did the Ceres karoo- Sutherland route then to Merweville and to Prins albert. He had a crash 10 km from PA and passed away on the scene. My dad witnessed the whole mess.
Long story I know, but just to get the idea behind the rebuild and costs.
After a cooling of period for my mom inlaw and my sisters and brother inlaw they decided they wan't to get the bike fixed.
The bike doesn't look very bad, BUT unfortunately the main engine casings have been smashed on the bottom and the handlebars are thrash also the lefthandside swithches on the handlebar.
The rear section of the frame and luggage carrier is also bent.
I also think the front forks are bent.
The scooter is at Donford as they are/have done a quote.
However just the complete sub-assembly of the bike is R34000.00
A bare casing is R14000.00 this however excluding the labour to remove and refit engine and remove and refit cylinders, pistons, electrics etc.
WHY not get insurance to do it????
There is none my FI bought bike cash ??? ???
His Goldwing was insured thou (blerie Krywa)
So I have gotten Hold of ACME and they have a complete motor for me that will work out cheaper and apparantly it only has 7000km on the clock (600km more than my FI bike).
I can eemove an do most work on my Yz 450 and ktm 52 and so on. Q: how dificult is it to remove GS motor myself and refit new motor? Is it plug and play? What is problem areas I need to look at?
This rebuild is not financialy clever I know, but as I said my mother inlaw wan'ts to get it fixed up so I can use it or take it back home to Nam so we can use it there. I also think having the Yz, Hp and Adv will almost complete al my biking needs ( now just the 1098 Ducati).
If you know of spares please let me know.
Thanks
