I asked this question on the 800gs thread but did not get a definitive answer, so I'm throwing it out here.
My 800GS has 44000km's on now and is using a hell of a lot of oil lately. (1l + every 1000km's) its a bit much just to be the valve stem seals, (or is it) so rings is the other option IMO, but the problem is it does not smoke, also the pipe is dry on the inside (that is my limited understanding of diagnosis for ring failure). :dousing:
There is a lot of soot in the pipe, and one explanation from the mechanic is that the CAT burns so hot that it actually burns all the evidence away??. No power loss that i can notice also, and yes there is no oil leaks. ??? ???
BMW wants to open her insides, but i would like to know if there is a few other things to look for before i have to rob a bank to pay them to do so.
Also
It has to be done, if it has to be done (the major surgery) but what is the harm in just keeping her topped up with oil until i can save a bit to pay the stealer's to go ahead with said surgery.
Gimme some advice all you technical boffins...
