Learned fellow members of the Dog community, I come to you to ask for help and advice...
I have the opportunity to get a Transalp 400, 1994 model with 66000km on the clock or R24000.
The bike comes with new tires and a recovered seat. Only visible damage that I could pick up was a small scrape on one side of the fairing, such as would be made by a garage wall when moving in or out of a tight space.
Salesman started the bike, and the engine sounded smooth enough. I couldn't feel any pressure coming from the crank breather pipes, there was no smoke on start-up, or when blipping the gas. Sprocket (rear) and chain seem to be fairly good as well, with no forward-sloping teeth on the rear sprocket (couldn't see the front one).
Standing right next to this bike is a KLE400, with slightly lower k's (+- 45000), but the price is R26000. Somehow the KLE just didn't look as good as the Transalp. Also the salesman reckons that the TA would outrun the KLE.
Any and all advice from you would be most appreciated.
