Hooking up a 12v cable for a 60CSx

Can one hook the cable up directly from a power source (cutting the sigarette plug)? I think the Vista need to run via the sig plug since the transformer is located in the plug? Is this true for the 60CSx too? It got a round 4pin plug instead of the Vista's mini-usb power source.

I want to run it directly from the KLR's unused city-lights wires
