I think i broke my klr

So, it goes like this. I wanted to learn how to take the wheels off and fix the tubes myself.  (never got a puncture yet)

I took off the rear wheel (easy), then tried to get the tube out.  This wasn't easy. Shit.  I spent a long time wondering wtf. Then i went to the bike shop (with the wheel only) and asked the dudes there how to.  They showed me some neat tricks to get it out. The coolest one is to use another bike's sidestand to get the tire loose from the rim.

I then took the wheel back to my bike to put it back on.  I aligned all the parts and pushed the axle through with no problems. Then saw the brake pad is on the wrong side. Shit.  I took it all out again, put the brake pad on the right side and aligned everything again. 

Then i tried to push the axle through put it only went about half way.  It is stuck.  It doesn't want to go in our out.  I spent about an hour trying to get it through now. 

What should you do now?  Are you allowed to hit the thing with a mallet or something?  Has anyone else had a problem like this. The thing doesn't move at all!

WILL I BREAK SOMETHING IF I HIT IT WITH A HAMMER?
