I installed a Ctek power socket on my 800 Adventure as I'm not too fond of riding with cables and sockets and stuff dangling in the breeze. I don't use a tank bag so don't have anywhere to put that type of stuff on a trip anyway. The downside of the BMW canbus-based power socket is that you can only draw minimum current from it and it is only powered up with the ignition on. This precludes charging anything at night once you get to camp.
To solve this problem, I mounted a spare Ctek power socket I had in my workshop direct to my battery and routed it around to immediately in front of the handle bars. This short thread details the bits and pieces needed, nothing too complicated.
The Ctek power socket is normally supplied with a Ctek charger, along with a similar unit equipped with clips for charging a battery.
This is the power socket before connecting to the battery:
Once connected to the under-"tank" battery of the 800, it routes around to just in front of the handle bars:
I got this extension cord with the male plug on one end and a normal cigarette lighter socket on the other at Outdoor Warehouse in PE for around R180 if I recall correctly.
Then this Belkin USB socket that fits into the cigarette lighter socket I got at a cell phone shop (cannot recall the price):
Pop the waterproof cap off the Ctek female socket:
... plug in the male end with the USB socket
And hook up your cell phone. Eezy Peezy!
