2011 Jimny Convertible (soft top) - Pictures from before I bought it...
I was looking for a small automatic car September 2011..... Until I saw a Jimny in Vereeniging - a Soft Top Jimny! I did not hesitate; I phoned the dealer and 2 weeks later the finance was done and I jumped on a plane to Jo-Burg to go fetch my Jimny.
Originally, as I understand, the soft top (canvas top) Jimny was built in Spain by Santana motors under license from 2002 till 2009 when it was discontinued.
NONE was sent from Spain to South Africa - they were only imported from the UK.
As far as the records show only 5 original soft top Jimny's was ever imported. 2 numbers matching - body and chassis- and 3 bodies that was put on local chassis then reregistered as a 2011 vehicle.
The one I bought is a numbers matching body and chassis (????) but the original owner/importer told me it’s a locally fitted model. To me it does not matter as it’s an original factory build soft top body with the stronger center column overhead and stronger floor. The custom or locally fabricated versions I have seen so far all lacks this additional protection so they are a bit risky in my own opinion. This one I would still prefer with a roll cage type protection on the back but that is another day’s story…
I am keeping it as original as I can – or would want to go back to how they were made at the end of 2009. I am looking for the correct wheel cover for the back and the original rims. The current rims was upgraded as they from 2013’s limited edition.
As I go or if anyone finds original parts I will acquire.
Biggest thing my wife wants is a back canopy – hardtop but I love the soft top – or never closed top …..
The search for original will start soon, then a second one as both my boys wants one when they grow up!
Cheers for now - Sean
