Each Thursday we feature a significant South African pass and this week the Jouberts Pass falls under the spotlight. Not only is it a very well designed and built pass offering amazing views, but it also offers true-blue South African history with a story that defies belief - where a handful of farmers near Lady Grey in the Eastern Cape got so cheesed off with the British run government of the time (1912), that they decided to build their own road over the mountains to be able to get their produce to market in a shorter time frame.

Whilst most adventure bikers will amble over the pass without so much as a murmur, this is a pass that you absolutely must ride once in your lifetime. Allow half a day for the excursion and if you want to make the day even more memorable, ride it from west to east starting in Lady Grey and complete the whole 40 km gravel section which will get you back to the tarred R58 about halfway between the Kraai River Pass and Benjaminshoogte.

If you enjoy big gravel passes, then bookmark this one. We guarantee you will love it!
