The Baviaanssleutel is a massive rock split in two, where the R332 passes between the almost vertical walls. It is said that if one of these rocks topples over the 'key' to the Baviaanskloof will be lost. This was obviously noted before the advent of dynamite! The rock formation can be seen close to the southern end of the Nuwekloof Pass.
The Baviaanskloof is a lot like the Cederberg. It's one of those places that once visited, creeps into your soul, always willing you to return. During December, 2017 we tackled the big task of refilming all the passes and poorts dotted along the 182 km route - the longest road building project undertaken by Thomas Bain. In our news release today we explore the western-most entry into the Baviaanskloof, which is via the Nuwekloof Pass. It was bone dry on the day of filming and very different to our visit in 2012 during flood conditions.
We captured great video footage, filming with the new GoPro 6 Black. When you watch the video and see how smooth the footage is, you will not believe the camera was mounted on a Suzuki Jimny! The GoPro 6 has a built in 3 axis digital stabiliser which can be controlled remotely via the App. It has completely transformed the quality of our gravel road footage. We have two videos on the pass and when you watch it, select either 720HD or 1080HD to enjoy the crisp quality (if you have fast internet speed). We also uploaded onto the Vimeo platform (instead of YouTube) which offers better quality, less compression and no ads. Hope you guys like the results! (Feel free to post your comments - good or bad. Without feedback, we never know if what we are doing meets the demands of our viewers)
The news and pass pages are both open to Wild Dogs members until Sunday evening. Hope you all have a magical 2018 and safe travels to everyone!
